00:00:00: Welcome to a brand new episode of artsy-fartsy immigrants.

00:00:02: Today, I have very big question for you.

00:00:05: Why is Tatort Germany's most popular crime soap opera?

00:00:11: For those who might not know what that is which i'm assuming everyone outside of germany probably doesn't know Is uh... Tatort aka crime scene, is Germany's longest-running and most popular police procedural television drama airing Sunday nights on ARD since nineteen seventy.

00:00:29: That's wild!

00:00:30: Known for its ninety minute format the series features rotating teams of detectives in different cities across germany austria AND switzerland.

00:00:37: Okay so I just immediately take back that if you're outside of germany You don't know what that is because clearly You do.

00:00:43: If you're in Austria and Switzerland, that is I actually have a handful of friends here in Munich In the television and film industry.

00:00:49: they Have either directed And or written Or shot A few different tatoats.

00:00:54: It's very big thing it like when you go to New York City To pursue acting Like sort of a ride-of-passage Going to new york and shooting Lawn order SVU or criminal intent.

00:01:05: It's kind of similar to that, you know.

00:01:06: like every major actor you've ever heard of in your whole life have done a Law and Order episode.

00:01:11: so I-I Have a feeling it's kinda like that here too for Tatwat The structure Of the show is basically an anthology series produced by regional broadcasters meaning different Sundays feature different detectives And cities.

00:01:23: Oh see now th-that's interesting because i do Know each episode Is...it's the length of A film Like.

00:01:28: I know That its about ninety minutes long But um..i didn't actually know.

00:01:32: Every different Sunday, it's a different city.

00:01:35: I thought It was like a series of one City and then they move on to another One so the fact that They rotate.

00:01:40: That is kind of cool though.

00:01:41: do like Munster in Cologne and Berlin with over twelve hundred episodes?

00:01:49: It Is A massive cultural phenomenon drawing Millions Of viewers every week.

00:01:53: this This What i mean Like Doing Law & Order In New York especially in The early two thousands or the nineties comparing film grads, getting into the business here in Germany and they end up somehow working on a Tatort.

00:02:09: It's crazy!

00:02:09: I actually... funny enough i kind of did too-in a very minimal way..i had two friends who wrote one.

00:02:15: uh They wrote a couple but i mean though The One I worked On ,they Had Two Friends Who Wrote The One That I Worked On And Another Friend Who Is The Composer Of The Soundtrack For that Episode.

00:02:26: I guess there were one or two songs needed English text, so i wrote the lyrics.

00:02:31: The episodes typically focus on murder cases no way and are known for realism and addressing current social issues!

00:02:38: I have to break it to you... So..the only episode that's ever watched is the one that I worked on.

00:02:45: Oopsy-daisy But y'know the visuals very good well written, well directed And the music was

00:02:50: phenomenal!!

00:02:51: The show is famous for its iconic opening sequence THE TATE AUT FLOSCHPAD Uh, which has remained largely unchanged since nineteen seventy.

00:03:10: That makes me think a bit like how the opening song for Saturday Night Live Has been the same for so long.

00:03:19: Tatort crime scene is considered Germany's most beloved Crime soap opera.

00:03:25: that's an interesting difference.

00:03:26: It's not just a crime procedural, it is considered a crime soap opera.

00:03:30: Airing every Sunday at eight fifteen p.m on ARD serves as an unifying weekly event for millions often watched with family friends or in local pubs.

00:03:40: I remember there are two shows that became such a religion to me every single week.

00:03:47: I wasn't gonna miss anything for these shows.

00:03:49: One was Breaking Bad, we were shushing people after the commercial would end you know?

00:03:54: The other show is Game of Thrones.

00:03:55: Game Of Thrones was one that they'd always play at every single bar ever and i'm talking EVERY SINGLE BAR in New Orleans every Sunday night.

00:04:05: it is often cited as a mirror of German society, reflecting current affairs and social issues such as immigration terrorism.

00:04:13: And corruption which sparks discussions you're routinely watching.

00:04:17: It feels like an event.

00:04:18: You're there every week for your friends are all connected to us.

00:04:21: that water cooler sort of thing who'd invite or not invite to your next birthday party.

00:04:35: Todd Ort is produced by different regional state broadcasters, which brings unique local flavors accents and at times humor-to-different city.

00:04:42: the series uses a rotating cast of over fifteen distinct detective teams allowing viewers to choose their favorite rather than relying solely on high speed chases.

00:04:52: Todd ort focuses heavily on character development in the personal lives of the investigators.

00:04:57: for me what really grabbed me?

00:04:59: detective wise that also Involved their private life.

00:05:02: so much was true.

00:05:02: detective only season one mind you like.

00:05:05: that's still my favorite Season of television just ever made Miroslav.

00:05:09: I want to say Nimic could be nimic sorry Germans.

00:05:12: and Udo Wachtfeitel.

00:05:15: ooh Wacht feidel.

00:05:16: since nineteen ninety-one he has played chief inspector Franz Lothmaier alongside Miloslav Nemetsch.

00:05:23: I mean, the thing is that focus isn't on these guys right?

00:05:25: Clearly we've seen there's other actors who also do it and have paid attention to them.

00:05:30: They're all done their time!

00:05:31: And they payed their dues.

00:05:33: We are going in with this Ten rules behind a fifty year old TV show.

00:05:37: Here you go.

00:05:37: The opener is a rule at eight fifteen Sunday evenings after the Tagesschau which let me know if I should do a video about the Tagesschau because every time i've seen The Tagessào,I feel like have so many opinions of it.

00:05:48: So the tradition?

00:05:49: The local color!

00:05:50: Yeah It's set in different region In Germany each week Been around for fifty years Longest running crime show And German speaking Europe Snack bars are as essential to Tatord As ketchup is French fries Excuse Me.

00:06:02: While American officers and CSI series... I called it.

00:06:06: I said already I'm in CSI and La Nora Way ahead of you, Deutsche Welle.

00:06:15: While the American officers in the CSI series which by-the way also mixes up their locations even if there are only three... Now, CSI does it to EVEN KNOW.

00:06:23: IT'S ONLY THREE PLANESHAGE!

00:06:24: Miami, New York and La Fungus Discussed Their Cases In Bars.

00:06:28: Their German Colleagues Go To The Local Snack Bar To Talk From Bratwurst to Freisendfurbia.

00:06:34: None Of Them Seem Particularly Interested And Staying Healthy.

00:06:37: Deutsche Wella You sassy little bitch!

00:06:39: You're being too sassy Deutsche Welle.

00:06:43: Who do you think you are?

00:06:45: I love it, let's get cocked ass!

00:06:46: Das Auto.

00:06:47: Apart from the snack bar and the Tartor detectives also loved to think through their cases by chatting in the car Germans favorite means of transportation.

00:06:54: Carl Friedrich Böhne The arrogant an overly intellectual pathologist in Münster drives a sportscar.

00:07:01: Clara Blum From Lake Constance prefers a Freddy Schenck from Cologne.

00:07:05: So they're just listing all the cars that the detectives have.

00:07:09: Thus Alto is not just a part of The German Soul, it's also a window into their souls.

00:07:14: calm down.

00:07:14: The Tartar Detectives are A colorful bunch.

00:07:17: none Is like the other.

00:07:18: most however Are more anti-hero than hero or heroin?

00:07:22: Heroine?

00:07:23: I hate that this pronounce the same.

00:07:24: they tend to be single parents working through failed relationships Not unlike Their colleagues and Swedish crime series.

00:07:30: if you're in Europe And You ever come across Like Just some random Swedish film Or Some Swedish Crime Show Drab dark gray, everyone's got a drug problem.

00:07:39: Everyone smokes cigarettes and doing like custody battles with their recently divorced partners.

00:07:45: no wonder you put your whole life into work.

00:07:48: it got nothing else going on.

00:07:50: they have crooked teeth and bulging bellies.

00:07:53: this article sounds like it was written by the ex-wife of one of the actors.

00:07:57: It's really sad.

00:07:58: actually.

00:07:59: They've all got bad teeth in there.

00:08:01: fat have an embarrassingly awkward gait, like G-A-I-T.

00:08:06: Like a weird for the... Just a big awkward way of walking.

00:08:09: when chasing after speedy suspects on foot Everyone messed up their marriage.

00:08:14: They lost their kids Their fat they got bad teeth.

00:08:18: They can't run right.

00:08:19: I'm like who dude do you hate this show?

00:08:22: It's immediately obvious that these characters would never turn up in American French or Italian crime shows.

00:08:27: What?

00:08:28: Where the detectives tend to resemble models and athletes.

00:08:31: Deutsche Welle, you are one sassy little bitch today!

00:08:35: Female detectives are well-respected on Tatord... ...and make up about half of them without an official quota ever being introduced.

00:08:42: Without an official quote, can't ya count

00:08:44: em'up?!

00:08:44: Watch the show and count how many female detectives there are.

00:08:48: This is the weirdest article I have ever read in my life.

00:08:51: Investigation teams are often male-female duos, alrighty or already tidy?

00:08:55: Twitter frenzy!

00:08:56: You shouldn't be surprised to see a recurring trend on German twitter each Sunday before or at eight fifteen.

00:09:01: as old school jingle sounds the frenzy breaks loose.

00:09:04: so people who like this show go on twitter jump into the hashtag and engage.

00:09:08: That's literally every single popular show, so that... I mean okay but you know do they also have crooked teeth in big fat bellies?

00:09:15: Like what is going on here!

00:09:17: It was during the two thousand six soccer world cup in Germany.

00:09:20: that Germans started their practice of watching sport events in large groups.

00:09:23: They even gave it a word.

00:09:25: sounds like its borrowed from English public viewing.

00:09:28: Those are English words.

00:09:30: Weird article, dude!

00:09:31: Like a football match, Tadort's been enjoyed in pubs for many years.

00:09:34: They drink they speculate who is gonna do it.

00:09:36: yeah like I was doing with Game of Thrones exactly okay cool social dimension produced by public rather than private broadcasters.

00:09:43: uh Tadord is not purely about entertainment but also about encouraging dialogue over current social issues.

00:09:48: German talk show host Anne Will has a broadcast slot just after Tador and sometimes picks up the topic related to the episode.

00:09:54: I remember when Walking Dead was like popping off on AMC and they kicked-off a talk show about The Episode called Talking Dead.

00:10:01: that came out right after, which is really cool.

00:10:04: Final thing... and then i'm gonna let you guys go.

00:10:06: Facts have to be checked!

00:10:07: That's not only true but the facts in Tatort, Oxymoron right there.

00:10:13: A dissertation has actually been written about the representation of corpses in The Popular Show, and different books about Tauhdart have been published including a new one that celebrates a fiftieth anniversary with a series of little-known and bizarre facts!

00:10:27: And it fits nicely with the fifty year old tradition which now is fifty six.

00:10:33: so this was written during the pandemic by Sarah Judith Hoffman who thinks Literally any detective on the show is fat with crooked teeth, can't run right and wouldn't be on TV in literally any other country.

00:10:46: Who cares what they look like?

00:10:47: Just be nice!

00:10:48: Alright guys that's gonna it for me.
