00:00:00: Alright ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to a brand new episode of Artsy Fartsy Immigrants.

00:00:05: This is the special twenty-twenty six Oscars edition.

00:00:09: We will be getting into lots of different things But the majority of this episode will be about my opinions on The best picture nominees for the twenty twenty sixth Academy Awards hosted once again by my hero Conan O'Brien.

00:00:23: Let's get into it.

00:00:41: Okay, okay.

00:00:42: So as long-time listeners will know last year Conan O'Brien hosted the Academy Awards and that was an extra special event for me in particular because I have a very close friend who was there.

00:00:59: My friend Moritz Binder along with the director of the film Tim Febbaum And co writer Alex David were all Academy Award nominated for the film September five, which I had really fun jobs on working behind-the-scenes with The Script a little bit just.

00:01:20: you know small things but Which led mainly into A job as a background extra and i Just cannot believe that.

00:01:28: I Had such a luxury Working On That And to have the privilege and honor of having a talented, wonderful friend actually be present in West Hollywood.

00:01:40: I believe it was at The Adobe Theater... Dolby?

00:01:44: At the Dolby Theatre not Adobe Not Editing Software at The Dolby Theater which i think is also right across the street pretty much from where Jimmy Kimmel shoots his late night show.

00:01:55: besides the point but What's really cool about that, and this is just a little anecdote.

00:01:59: Is that Moritz very close friend of mine who was the you know person Who got me?

00:02:05: The job on his wonderful film to begin with is Also an enormous fan of Conan O'Brien.

00:02:12: So whenever there's like new interviews or interesting podcast clips Or pieces of social media that involve conan I always send them To moritz when i think Of it right but i get the chance to do It.

00:02:24: And what's so fun was?

00:02:27: I remember last year when the Oscars were going on live TV, right?

00:02:35: I Was on a Vacation A little short one in the south or no?

00:02:42: it was an Austria.

00:02:43: I was in this Skiing wellness hotel area and oh side note.

00:02:49: Mm-hmm.

00:02:50: I think i might be losing my voice In my head, but I can hear it in my voice.

00:02:57: So excuse the raspiness and occasionally i will take some sips of water to try And ease It down.

00:03:04: But anyway?

00:03:06: I was at this hotel and I signed up for one Of these international live stream Websites.

00:03:14: basically it Was all legal.

00:03:16: I signed Up For a free trial for seven Days but Canceled it.

00:03:20: I put an Alarm and Cancelled it within like forty Eight Hours or something.

00:03:23: And funny enough, I was dog sick.

00:03:51: Yes, best original screenplay.

00:03:53: Yeah and Once the once that category finished I closed the laptop went to sleep.

00:03:59: And it's a funny thing was throughout all of that i had The highest fever?

00:04:03: I think i've ever had in my life.

00:04:05: Um...I'm trying To Think Of It In Fahrenheit.

00:04:07: let me put it into google really quick just so i can't.

00:04:10: So everyone who listens uh american or otherwise will know i think i hand yeah Oh, yeah.

00:04:21: Yeah I had.

00:04:21: so i had a fever that was touching on like one oh two One oh three Fahrenheit.

00:04:25: So about you know Just around forty degrees Celsius fever like very Very dangerously sick.

00:04:33: And on the trip?

00:04:34: I ended up having to fevers actually which is crazy just my body rejecting skiers and ski culture evidently anyway.

00:04:42: uh-so yeah last year I had a very personal investment in the Oscars, not only because my friend was nominated and I was so proud.

00:04:52: And so you know locked-in terms of oh maybe who knows what's gonna happen here but also because Conan O'Brien hosting it meant a lot to me.

00:05:02: i think he is incredible.

00:05:03: im glad they brought him back.

00:05:05: He such an idol of mine, positive heartfelt just genuine person.

00:05:13: for that be host.

00:05:15: I mean, it's serendipitous.

00:05:18: Right?

00:05:18: It means just like Kismet is unbelievable.

00:05:21: Now we are here in twenty-twenty six.

00:05:24: Just as a side note the other nominees for last year For that category specifically We're Anora by Sean Baker The brutalist from Brady Corbett or Corbet and Mona Fastfold.

00:05:38: A Real Pain Jesse Eisenberg.

00:05:39: September five obviously.

00:05:41: And The Substance By Korolai Fargo.

00:05:46: It sounds bad.

00:05:47: So it looks like Coralife Fargett Looks terrible But I believe...I Believe.

00:05:58: a real pain one, i think Which you know at the end of day Of all those nominees.

00:06:04: if its not going to be September five If Its A Real Pain That's a great movie You Know?

00:06:10: It'd Be Like If I Was Up Against Like for a stand-up comedy or content creator competition thing like this.

00:06:22: some award show and me losing the Award to This is ridiculous.

00:06:30: This would never happen, but like you know losing the category to like John Mulaney Or You Know too Ali Wong or Trying think of on the spot now I'm like what other comics do?

00:06:42: I love.

00:06:42: I love lots of stand up comics Basically, yeah.

00:06:46: Or like, you know, Shane Gillis or Andrew Santino... Anyway whatever it'd be losing to someone that I respect a lot.

00:06:56: so the fact they didn't win It's-I wanted them to win but going into real pain and was like well You Know What?

00:07:07: At least They Lost To Something That i really Really Like because if they had lost too as we know Listeners of this if they lost to the substance, I would have lost my mind.

00:07:19: Okay.

00:07:19: This is off topic.

00:07:20: so anyway We're gonna get into some fun stuff this episode.

00:07:24: we are looking at The twenty-twenty six best picture nominees.

00:07:30: Now this won't be a long drawn out breakdown Of every single movie because Funny enough there will be some very controversial opinions.

00:07:42: as usual I felt like i was the only person on planet earth who didn't like the substance And it's one of those things where you know, I thought that the more.

00:07:50: I expressed in full detail with nuance With a history of education and film why?

00:07:55: I didn't Like this substance The more people were just like yeah man But you just liked didn't get it dude You're just like your.

00:08:02: a misogynist now is like no I wasn't really clear about.

00:08:07: There's gonna be some experiences like That in this eye but This won't Be as long A drawn out As last Years because This is an episode where I did not, or this was a year.

00:08:17: Where i have NOT seen every film by far!

00:08:22: This might be my least viewed Academy of War nomination episode ever.

00:08:28: isn't it wild?

00:08:30: Like there's some films that came out... ...that I just didn't hear about for so long..I tried to watch some- I'm gonna get into it.

00:08:39: hold on okay.

00:08:43: So let's just jump right in.

00:08:45: I think you know one of the main front runners for The best picture and nomination is i'm gonna start with the films.

00:08:55: I have seen okay, And I do think that the one That I've seen twice in the cinema and then I do Think as a front runner Is One battle after another.

00:09:07: now?

00:09:08: I don't Know if You guys Have Seen it.

00:09:10: If You got A chance to See It In A proper Cinema then lucky you.

00:09:15: I'm so glad i got to do that, once with Ify and once my good friend Robbie.

00:09:29: From the first frame to the last, just a full enjoyment.

00:09:33: engagement like laugh out loud moments.

00:09:35: Like genuinely laugh-out-loud moments perfect tension.

00:09:39: I love the music.

00:09:40: people have some complaints about the music.

00:09:42: i understand it's not for everybody.

00:09:44: um It's a bit obscure...it'a bit like dissonant and stressful but I think it fits it perfectly.

00:09:52: oh that actually reminds me of one little controversial.

00:09:57: I'm gonna put that as a side note.

00:09:59: controversial thing for different movie, but anyway one battle after another.

00:10:03: so One of the one if not perhaps the best current living American filmmaker today generationally defining like groundbreakingly special different Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

00:10:23: Um, for those who are not like film geeks.

00:10:26: He's you know he's made like.

00:10:27: You know there will be blood the master boogie nights magnolia punch-drunk love Plenty of others inherent vice which I didn't like.

00:10:37: but still uh?

00:10:38: He's made so many movies.

00:10:39: this was a really different angle For him.

00:10:44: it's two hours and forty-two.

00:10:45: Wow, that's the cool thing too is I didn't even feel that there's a lot of movies I see That are like over two and a half hours And it feels like this did not feel like that to me.

00:10:56: Seeing it twice.

00:10:57: II just thoroughly enjoyed from top to bottom.

00:11:00: i think It's you know every Every nomination.

00:11:06: You Know how many nominations?

00:11:10: quite see it.

00:11:12: I'm probably looking at the wrong thing, but what i really love about one battle after another is literally every single thing right?

00:11:19: It's a really unique voice Paul Thomas Anderson...I think yeah like I was saying maybe THE most interesting current filmmaker.

00:11:33: this is just my opinion.

00:11:34: This Is Not Gospel.

00:11:36: You Can Disagree And you should.

00:11:38: if you don't agree, please voice it.

00:11:40: This is art.

00:11:41: everyone should have their own opinion.

00:11:42: this in my opinion.

00:11:43: When when it's announced that there is a new Paul Thomas Anderson I am Chomping at the bit to go see what It Is and i don't think every movie he's made is equally as good As The Other.

00:11:55: Like I was saying inherent vices for me are very bad Movie.

00:11:59: I Don't enjoy it At all.

00:12:00: but You know things like the master or There will be blood and Boogie Nights.

00:12:06: People go crazy for Magnolia, look it's a masterpiece... It got a pacing issue that bothers me.

00:12:14: but again its not bad movie!

00:12:16: Its just great movie!

00:12:18: Not something I would put on because i wanted to watch something great.

00:12:22: so thats my favorite movie.

00:12:24: But there is something about his voice His unique approach of things which stands out.

00:12:33: It's a language, it's a cinema language that you know.

00:12:37: when I think about these filmmakers.

00:12:39: These altours That When they are at the helm of creating a film whether or not They've written it Or Not You Know There'S Gonna Be Sort Of A Cinematic Language That's Identifiable To Them.

00:12:51: And He Is The Defining Voice For Me in terms of like, that's a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

00:12:59: And the funny thing is they're so different.

00:13:00: Boogie Nights has nothing like The Master but it-it's exactly because of that.

00:13:06: It would be like you know when I look... When i think about Greta Gerwig and go oh boom Francis Ha You Know?

00:13:12: I Think Of Little Women.

00:13:14: I mean Barbie was big leap.

00:13:15: That Was A Big Change For Her But..I think About Like Oh!

00:13:19: I Can Feel That.

00:13:21: Or Like Oh, like with Alexander Payne.

00:13:24: You know there's the Descendants this great George Clooney movie.

00:13:27: it is beautiful its heartfelt and sad but funny.

00:13:31: you know he directed The Holdovers which was one of my favorite movies I think ever.

00:13:38: I have several posters of the holdovers in my home, and i'm looking currently at a poster Of The Master with Joaquin Phoenix here.

00:13:46: And I have you know A Real Pain Here poster?

00:13:48: I Have September Five posters.

00:13:50: so like there are certain voices that just stand out to me and Paul Thomas Anderson You Know if you're In The Film World That Is A Voice That Just Resonates.

00:14:01: um...I think Sofia Coppola also has this voice, even though I disliked this person so much.

00:14:09: Lars von Trier has his kind of

00:14:11: voice."

00:14:12: Werner Herzog had a voice literally because he narrates everything!

00:14:16: But you know...I also think that Ryan Kugler will get into centers soon but Despite the opinions I will get into about centers.

00:14:28: I do think also that he is a really interesting voice for The kind of movies, he's trying to make or that he wants to make.

00:14:36: so all that aside i Am not seeing a list of everything it's nominated for.

00:14:41: it's not made for quite A handful things but I would just basically break It down in the simplest way possible.

00:14:47: first off um?

00:14:49: I love Leonardo DiCaprio.

00:14:52: You know I liked someone like him Need to like.

00:14:58: I liked his advocacy for For climate change, but also don't like that.

00:15:04: He's just kind of a stunted You know Fifty year old man who only dates twenty two-year-old models and stuff like that.

00:15:11: But you know what?

00:15:12: Who gives a shit right?

00:15:13: That is private life.

00:15:15: this one saying Like except when it comes to people like Woody Allen or Harvey Weinstein You have to kinda separate that stuff because i dont really care What he does.

00:15:24: so hes not doing anything illegal.

00:15:26: Well, I mean he's not doing anything illegal with other.

00:15:33: He is NOT doing Kevin Spacey Weinstein Bill Cosby stuff.

00:15:36: so i don't care!

00:15:38: As long as everyone around him is missing this over at least twenty then fine whatever.

00:15:45: um... This is SO off topic.

00:15:46: what im trying to say is that I like to separate all of them from him as an actor.

00:15:53: Him as an Actor right?

00:15:55: One of my favorite actors ever like.

00:15:59: I don't there.

00:16:00: There might not be a Leo film that I have not seen.

00:16:05: Trying to think if they're is, I mean there's like this weird black and white one i think from Like the late nineties That They tried To?

00:16:13: They Tried to Get Rid Of.

00:16:16: They Tryed This Scrap.

00:16:17: I Don't Know.

00:16:17: There's God.

00:16:19: Okay Anyway Let's start over.

00:16:21: okay Jesus Jordan you're on ADHD medication Shouldn't it be working?

00:16:25: It should.

00:16:25: Be working now, what's working?

00:16:27: let's lock in Leo one of my favorite actors right.

00:16:30: Let's talk about who these people are on screen.

00:16:32: leo is one of our favorite actors.

00:16:34: I will always watch something that he's in.

00:16:36: i Of course titanic.

00:16:38: i've watched a thousand times.

00:16:39: i love titanic.

00:16:41: The departed.

00:16:42: oh my god so great.

00:16:44: i'm not A huge fan of inception.

00:16:47: Oh Nolan fans don't come knocking On My door.

00:16:51: i know the no the nolanites Are pretty Pretty crazy But I like him in that movie.

00:16:58: He's great.

00:16:59: and the movie, you know The Revenant here.

00:17:01: he definitely deserve that.

00:17:02: Oscar basketball diaries You know oh my god even blood diamond or What was after the departed there?

00:17:12: Was another one that it so...I mean don't look up Adam McKay film from Netflix topical social Satirical commentary.

00:17:24: he did a great job and he played a different version that usually you see like very confident Sexy Leo, and that was a cool change of pace for him.

00:17:33: And that's also a similar thing That I'm getting from one battle.

00:17:37: so Leo is an actor i will always adore.

00:17:41: My final take on his performance in this movie Is that?

00:17:45: I don't think.

00:17:48: I Don't Think it Was His Best Performance.

00:17:51: Maybe He does.

00:17:54: he commits right.

00:17:55: so Leo, he-he does a great job at whatever.

00:17:59: He tries to do... ...He's a great Bob Ferguson!

00:18:02: He's great in the movie and I should rephrase that.

00:18:05: He is SO good At what?

00:18:08: He does.

00:18:09: He commits one hundred and ten percent.

00:18:12: part of me almost Wants to see a different actor in this role.

00:18:20: It's really hard to put into words why I feel that way.

00:18:26: Like you know behind the scenes in movies There are so much decision-making.

00:18:34: That is never Brought to the public eye, you know.

00:18:40: clearly PTA and Leo have wanted to work together for a long time, you know Leo works with the absolute best directors ever.

00:18:50: Oh catch me if you can that's another one yeah.

00:18:52: so like he's worked with Spielberg and Scorsese and Tarantino once upon a time in Hollywood... He is working all of The Greats which has wonderful luxury that he had.

00:19:06: I get that desire.

00:19:09: people come to him projects, you know at this I mean since he was like twenty-five.

00:19:15: Um...I wonder if there might have been a better choice for that role?

00:19:26: At the end of day though That's such a mild complaint right because He is great in it and he so funny!

00:19:35: And its'a great sort uh twist of the action tropes like he kind of fails at everything.

00:19:41: He's always a step behind, he never saves the day but his motivations are pure you know.

00:19:47: and so I would now that it's made i would never change it!

00:19:53: It is what it Locked in.

00:20:01: I am so like, I cannot take my eyes off of Leo DiCaprio.

00:20:04: Like II love this guy.

00:20:06: Like III just he's just.

00:20:09: he is mind you're like the same way people felt in The in the seventies and eighties and nineties.

00:20:14: about like De Niro or Pacino You know?

00:20:18: Or uh?

00:20:18: You Know young Brad Pitt are something not in terms of looks but just like captivating Just like boom.

00:20:23: it's like when you watch the dark night And your like oh my god Heath Ledger whoa He's there like he's in.

00:20:28: you're in it.

00:20:29: I'm in it, I Love him.

00:20:32: I do wonder if they would have maybe had a different impact with a different actor their.

00:20:39: But now that it is what?

00:20:40: It is i would never change it.

00:20:42: so yes i think whatever one battle after another gets And i'm thinking it will probably get best picture i Do think it deserves it.

00:20:53: shout out to You know chase infinity who funny enough she so she plays the daughter.

00:21:01: I think she's playing like a Seventeen-year old something that in real life, she's twenty five which Leo never dates older than and he plays her dad.

00:21:11: That's funny.

00:21:13: Also So wonderful to see Sean Penn on screen again.

00:21:16: all of his choices big bold brash perfect.

00:21:20: love it Love It love it love it so much.

00:21:23: Virginia Hall amazing actress, so glad to see her in a role like this.

00:21:27: Teyana Taylor perfectly... she's a badass.

00:21:31: and then she is so perfectly hateable!

00:21:33: She's so well cast because I- Her name was Perfidia and i just hate her so much.

00:21:40: but she does bad things.

00:21:42: and of course the Man Of The Hour Sergio St Carlos Venicio de Toro Love that man.

00:21:51: He could.

00:21:51: he can literally go into a screen with a beer belly And just fart and I'd be like, man Benicio del Toro is so awesome.

00:21:59: Okay i've spent twenty minutes on this movie okay?

00:22:02: So that's my big My big sort of like.

00:22:04: yes, I know people have mixed feelings about one battle.

00:22:09: Every opinion is valid.

00:22:11: People don't like Paul Thomas Anderson or they think these movies.

00:22:15: you know flips of tropes Like how the hero isn't really a hero how there's no big sort of like final battle that you would see in, like a Mission Impossible movie.

00:22:25: Instead it instead is this meditative drive over rolling hills.

00:22:29: for me That Is Great Filmmaking and It's Different And It Worked.

00:22:35: Bold Choices You Know.

00:22:36: No Risk No Reward.

00:22:38: Swing Big Swing BIG.

00:22:40: So I Love It.

00:22:42: Okay Moving on I'm trying to think about what else i saw here.

00:22:45: so... I stopped F-One about.

00:22:52: I stopped f one, about thirty minutes in so it's not even fair for me to give an opinion on.

00:22:59: you know i don't get why F One is the best picture nomination.

00:23:06: It Is its Jerry Brookheimer Brad Pitt.

00:23:11: like For Me f-one is one of THE most by The Book Like it'd be like if would feel like.

00:23:22: the plot Generally speaking is something that like a freshman in film school could come up with All right.

00:23:28: So you have this like legendary Driver, right?

00:23:32: And he's kind of getting old and he's kinda like kind of retired but looking for some purpose.

00:23:40: then these rich guys they're like yo we gotta bring the ol dog back.

00:23:45: I always think of like the godfather isn't part three or something where he's like every time i get out Like uh, Everytime.

00:23:52: I crawl out they pull me back in.

00:23:54: you know It just so it's So tropey and so cliche?

00:23:57: I don't know.

00:23:59: And You Know Brad Pitt's like.

00:24:00: you know He is Just this sixty year old guy who Is racing with twenty five Year Old F-One Drivers In The Most prestigious Racing Corporation on the globe and uh you know just does pull-ups in this camper van, it needs peanut butter sandwiches.

00:24:15: And we're like yeah sure that's what...that's how that works!

00:24:19: ...and then goes and like drives with Portia.

00:24:23: and oh what's the other?

00:24:25: The big one anyway whatever doesn't matter.

00:24:27: Rich people doing rich people stuff.

00:24:30: old guy gets brought out of retirement to go drive fast cars and sure should i get nominated for some special effects?

00:24:39: absolutely Did you know that every single scene of him driving is CGI?

00:24:45: That everything around him is fake.

00:24:47: You probably didn't know that.

00:24:49: shout out to corridor crew, a great YouTube channel and it focuses only on VFX And they broke all that down in this really fascinating.

00:24:58: so yeah sound design Special effects hundred percent.

00:25:03: Yeah Great!

00:25:04: It looks great.

00:25:06: Could not be more boring plot Stopped it after thirty minutes was like I can't finish this.

00:25:10: I don't care If there's not if there's none, if I don' t care You know isn't?

00:25:16: is that also?

00:25:16: Let me just break This down too because i sound so pretentious right now and I'm Not trying to.

00:25:21: if It doesn't mean That Like Every Single Movie has To Break the Traditional.

00:25:26: you Know Three you know three Arc Structure.

00:25:29: And Like you know in That every Film Has to have a midpoint everything has to be like Perfectly Original.

00:25:33: you know it's not as if like.

00:25:34: They Can't Have like The Basics But they have but still you have to have someone need to care about.

00:25:40: that's the number one thing.

00:25:42: You have two if your following a character?

00:25:46: Yeah, half-to-care About The Character and I met Brad Pitt knows like.

00:25:49: okay so he is A living legend who was like kind of broke but He's got his six back in a full head of hair And he's Like a heart throw.

00:25:59: he's like this Heartthrob Guy Who Is a Living Legend and then like some guy with money comes over and he's.

00:26:07: We really need you to get back in the race and it's like.

00:26:11: wouldn't have been so much more interesting if Like the Brad Pitt character was like of such a washout now If it was like some Paul Giamatti guy Who?

00:26:21: like In his youth looked like Brad Pitt did in the nineties, but now is like I can do.

00:26:27: You know that maybe he goes over and like, you Know teach my coaches are young guys they don't get along And they it becomes like a found family thing.

00:26:36: I'm basically.

00:26:36: that's basically the plot to hold over.

00:26:39: but um You know, i could just imagine It could have been handled a bit more uniquely with a bit More emotional depth.

00:26:47: But it's just like all right you old dog?

00:26:50: He got one more drive in ya and i'm Like i've seen That movie so many times.

00:27:11: He so great!

00:27:15: Oh Vagnamora!

00:27:17: I mean i think Americans would say Wagner but like Wagnamorah The Germans would say.

00:27:25: One of one of the most interesting actors working today and You know mixed language, which is not a even at all to turn off for me.

00:27:35: It's more just informational But it is a thought-provoking political thriller that deliberately revisits over a defining moment in Brazilian history.

00:27:43: So yeah historical political thriller and its like in Portuguese And as any of it in English I'm not sure.

00:27:51: i think it split II don't know.

00:28:09: Okay.

00:28:09: So I was gonna say kind of almost feels like they tacked on something with a great lead To that's.

00:28:15: you know?

00:28:20: I Was Gonna Make A Bad Take.

00:28:22: I'm not informed enough to make a take Like That so I'm Not Going to Make It.

00:28:25: so I retract all Of That.

00:28:26: Stepping It Down Shouldn't go in that direction.

00:28:30: I was gonna make a really bad Suggestion, but the thing is it could be amazing.

00:28:34: and the thing Is?

00:28:34: I love that actor.

00:28:35: I Really Love like Nemora so Maybe It's Incredible.

00:41:16: Who witnesses?

00:41:17: Like death and tragedy while building railways in like logging Lumber in the I'm guessing eighteen hundred train dreams has been Compared to the work of Terrence Malick.

00:41:34: Okay, that should give you it for film geeks.

00:41:36: That should give me a pretty good sign and do love me some.

00:42:46: you already know What am going to say.

00:42:49: I like This Movie a lot But I do not think it should be nominated For Best Picture.

00:42:56: okay This should not be nominated for best picture.

00:43:02: It doesn't fit at all.

00:43:05: it's like Like f-one in a completely different reasons, but like it does not belong here I also don't think the Frankenstein belongs there.

00:43:14: But anyway Here we go.

00:43:16: The movie is the brand new black comedy thriller film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

00:43:23: It Is the yeah dark comedy thriller bugonia begonia with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

00:43:32: So I am an enormous Yorgos Lanthimos fan, the only film effects that i have not seen because I Have a really strong gut instinct it will be bad is kinds of kindness?

00:43:47: I'm almost refusing to watch it.

00:43:49: cuz like...I know It's Not Gonna Be Good I just get that vibe, there's like an instinct sometimes.

00:43:54: You know what i mean?

00:43:54: Like you look at a trailer or poster or picture of clip review and your like ugh thats gonna be bad!

00:44:00: Of course u should ALWAYS make ur own opinions... And eventually will watch it.

00:44:05: but they released kinds of kindness.. The trailers came out for kindness when were doing the oscar press tour for poor things And I was like this feels rushed and it was they were editing poor things while filming kinds of kindness, so why?

00:44:26: Why?

00:44:27: It's a weird.

00:44:28: Feels Like They added like A DLC to a video game.

00:44:30: that's So strange.

00:44:31: but anyway eventually i'll watch That.

00:44:33: But Otherwise I mean the Favorite The Lobster Poor Things Dogtooth.

00:44:40: There are so many great movies that I love by yoga slantimos And this is a, you know an occasionally divisive conversation between me and certain friends Moritz.

00:44:51: But I also respect that he doesn't like him.

00:44:53: That's okay!

00:44:54: i loved poor things.

00:44:55: He hates poor things...that what cinema all about baby.

00:45:11: I think it really REALLY interestingly shot General plot up until the ending.

00:45:19: I like the ending more and more, but it's like It makes it so goofy that is like kind of ruins detention in my opinion.

00:45:25: I'm not good Like.

00:45:26: sorry if i don't want to spoil things like incase people do get The interest To watch it its I Do think for the majority Of the movie?

00:45:33: Its a really cool dark comedy thriller with this sort of mystery That Really pushes you I Think In terms of like.

00:45:43: well You know, like the front part of your brain is well I believe that.

00:45:48: or oh that seems suspicious.

00:45:50: Or Oh but that felt a lie.

00:45:52: and in the back to you head what would be easiest answer?

00:45:56: Maybe he wouldn't do the easiest answer because if he did the easiest answers then it's not an obvious answer.

00:46:06: It does play...I think its fun!

00:46:08: He didn't write just for Will Tracy Moritz's piece of mind.

00:46:16: He didn't write it, he just directed it.

00:46:18: but I absolutely adore how this film looks on camera!

00:46:39: Don't know it stuck with me and the more that I thought about it afterwards.

00:46:46: The more that II liked it, and if he also didn't like it You know?

00:46:49: I mean she didn't hate it but she Didn't you know?

00:46:53: sit on it and go like this is garbage.

00:46:55: It was just like the ending.

00:46:56: yes Yeah sure yeah there's conversations to be had.

00:46:59: they're absolutely understandable.

00:47:01: But then you know it's a guy always say opinions are meant to be head its good If not everyone agrees on everything.

00:47:06: III really liked begonia, but I don't think that it belongs in the best picture list.

00:47:15: And last, but not least is Hamnet!

00:47:20: So... The director of Hamnet is- Wait.

00:47:29: Oh.

00:47:53: Extreme Danger.

00:47:56: Yeah anyway no danger I guess.

00:47:58: Why don't they just start with test?

00:48:00: why would they say...why wouldn't?

00:48:03: the notification says extreme danger and then you have to read for it.

00:49:15: However when tragedy strikes dies at a young age, it inspires Shakespeare to write his timeless masterpiece Hamlet.

00:49:27: The very first frame of the movie is a quote from some mysterious source because there's no like place where it was written.

00:49:32: that just has words and he goes... Okay, that might be too harsh.

00:49:47: look so I like a good artsy film.

00:49:50: That pushes like of viewers.

00:49:55: The push is the viewer right?

00:49:56: So you know they're like we were talking about your guess.

00:49:58: line them us II Like dog tooth.

00:50:01: I liked the lobster and I Know that a lot people can't get behind that.

00:50:10: Try to think it have some other.

00:50:12: I was trying things mother artsy-ish movies than I don't know Like waking life or like with link leaders.

00:50:21: There's just.

00:50:22: there's things that It's hard to think of it on the spot, but there's just certain movies tonalities structural choices That will clearly affect or Alienate your audience.

00:50:36: right this one isn't even that crazy?

00:50:41: I Just don't like the pacing Just don't like the vibe.

00:50:49: I don't know they're great actors, I mean Jesse Buckley Great actor Paul mescal great actor Kind of kind if maybe is crying to in too many movies thought it'd be fair.

00:51:01: It's like this ongoing joke Emily Watson's in there and she's She's something.

00:51:07: No, I'm kidding.

00:51:08: She's always a great actress but it just-I don't.

00:51:10: no Look look i got about one hour into it Uh, which let me see.

00:51:17: So there was another hour five right?

00:51:19: I got about an hour into it and like i just can't do this Um...I Hate that i'm getting to a point where i just cant- If im watching!

00:51:29: Like if im in film..if i was in the cinema look All of the films Im talking about that.

00:51:34: i left like f one.

00:51:36: i turned off.

00:51:37: Oh my god i didn't get to sinners.

00:51:40: Oh my god, that was the big bang.

00:51:42: Okay okay?

00:51:43: I'll wrap up with Hamnet for me just too boring i didn't care.

00:51:49: like you know Agnes she's Given birth in the forest, she's like rubbing witchcraft powder on her hands.

00:51:55: She is such a red flag Old Billy Shakespeare over here.

00:52:00: He's such a pushover.

00:52:03: I just don't care!

00:52:05: And time would jump crazily.

00:52:09: They'd be like Oh father we're falling in love You'll never get my approval.

00:52:15: You're going to have a grandson and then it would be like smash cut.

00:52:18: She's nine months pregnant.

00:52:20: I'm like no No card, no title card Like Nine months later.

00:52:27: And then just be like her giving birth also.

00:52:30: This is a continuity thing for me.

00:52:32: There was like two births that I saw before I left the movie.

00:52:35: I don't know how many kids they had but there were two birthed.

00:52:39: One of them has heard screaming in the woods and then someone comes up in like, cause it's a baby boy.

00:52:45: And then picks the baby walks off.

00:52:47: I'm like hello.

00:52:49: umbilical cord though?

00:52:52: Did they just pop-off?

00:52:55: no mention of an umbilial cord.

00:52:56: she just farted a baby out into woods.

00:52:59: dude what are we doing here?

00:53:01: not thinking about an umbillical cord?

00:53:05: She gets on all fours and squats another one out.

00:53:07: Sorry mom for the language, but it's just like this.

00:53:09: ridiculous how they show that she-she like toots Another One Out Again!

00:53:13: She was like I'll take The Baby To The Other Room.

00:53:16: And She Was Like Let Me Hold My Baby No umbilical cord.

00:53:20: Anyway i'm getting it picky.

00:53:22: let's get to the real meat here boys & girls which is I didn't like.

00:53:31: sinners Shouldn't do That.

00:53:40: sorry I'm sorry, and that's the thing too.

00:53:43: It's like it's.

00:53:44: oh It's the its the most nominated movie of all time!

00:53:52: Its-it's the most Oscar-nominated movie in The history of the Academy Awards ever.

00:54:02: How was that?

00:54:02: Like how though...like it's fine..its just okay And it riles me up to same way.

00:54:13: the substance did where it's like.

00:54:15: if I say, i thought that The message of the substance is an important interesting message about how women are portrayed in media and How they're sort of pushed into?

00:54:25: The narrative that they have to retain their youth In order to progress in an ever-changing industry And that their bodies become more of a focus than Their intent or their talent.

00:54:37: But this was very boring and surface level way of showing It.

00:54:42: Then you're they're like your sexist dude.

00:54:44: You just didn't get it you misogynist pig and I'm like, I Just said that kind of story is very important.

00:54:50: Like III can list like thirty movies to talk about that topic in a much deeper more nuanced way.

00:54:58: That's about like humanity as opposed to like.

00:55:01: but like what if i injected myself with like squirt juice And then I was just pretty again?

00:55:05: But yeah, I guess you could do that.

00:55:07: That's also like a freshman.

00:55:08: It's also just like a student film idea.

00:55:11: Anyway, this is not... Sinners Is Not That Bad!

00:55:15: I should make that really crystal clear.

00:55:17: Sinners Isn't Like That Bad But it's... ...it's cliche?

00:55:23: I'm sorry.

00:55:25: It's categorized as an American horror film but its cheesy and it's- I don't know.. They should get nominated certainly for VFX And for innovation with cinematography Absolutely.

00:55:39: There's so many, like I'm gonna say all the things that look they're very innovative with how day-how They made The Michael B Jordan as twins Super innovative things.

00:55:50: How they were able to like hug and like one could light the other cigarette now?

00:55:54: They had this crazy Rigged camera That looked like ten go pros that he would put on like football shoulder pads.

00:56:00: All that stuff is really innovative and cool.

00:56:02: And i do think that you know Ryan Coogler.

00:56:06: It's not as if like.

00:56:07: I can't wait to watch his movies, but I think he's an important voice And I liked that.

00:56:11: He's always worked with Michael B Jordan and I like Fruitvale station.

00:56:14: That's a cool debut film that did well, and I think it's a really interesting movie.

00:56:19: But There's something about sinners that for me just feels Like so it's almost like it's just in the zeitgeist To be like the thing and it feels very forced to me.

00:56:29: For me at centers is like okay your of yours you're twins And you're in, the Delta and the nineteen thirties.

00:56:38: You want to open up a club so-to say like... I mean yeah it's just an old barn that has drinks when dancing live music.

00:56:49: That is cool!

00:56:49: That great!

00:56:51: The music good.

00:56:52: of course It's great musicians When we start getting into all white people In the Delta are literally vampires.

00:57:09: That's where it's like okay.

00:57:10: I mean, I get the message for sure.

00:57:13: There was gross behavior and still is to this day in.

00:57:17: there should be films talking about that.

00:57:20: racism should Be absolutely Artistically expressed and reminding people of how horrible behaviors Anybody is or like how.

00:57:38: there should all be art and film And music and culture should always reflect it.

00:57:43: Should always be a mirror reflecting back to the.

00:57:47: To them they main that you should also reflect Back-to-society.

00:57:51: Exactly what?

00:57:54: They've grown numb too so that they don't repeat bad behaviors in The same way of How.

00:58:01: I do think It's important, too That like Germans are So often You know reminded thorough detail in school about the Holocaust because that is behavior that needs to be like focused on never forgotten, reminded of.

00:58:15: You know there's such an important thing to that.

00:58:19: and um like Trevor Noah has a really great uh stand-up bit.

00:58:25: that's more philosophy than comedy actually but it's a great.

00:58:30: It's so strange that American history books want to just remove the chapter about slavery and That's a real thing.

00:58:39: But-that is happening And it's like well, why would you?

00:58:44: Just get rid of them because its unpleasant If You Get Rid Of History and You Don't Face it.

00:58:49: Look At It Your Bound To Repeat It Its Just The Most Obvious Rule Of Thumb.

00:58:54: So I think You know them.

00:58:57: this the general story.

00:58:58: This got very this got much deeper than I thought it would get.

00:59:01: basically sinners is Reminds me of the substance in the sense that?

00:59:05: The message they're giving Is just so surface level.

00:59:13: you're your oppressed struggling Southern dwelling African-American men In a world run by literally vampiric white racists who try to take down your livelihood and Threaten Your Safety And Try To you know Take Over You're Creative Expression.

00:59:43: I Just Don't Think They Did Anything That Interesting It's.

00:59:48: they Say it's a horror film not Not for A frame of This Movie.

00:59:53: Is It Scary?

00:59:54: Its Cartoonish.

00:59:56: The vampires look like the vampires from the Wesley Snipes Blade movies.

01:00:02: You know, Hailey Steinfeld... I don't know if she's just some hot white girl?

01:00:10: All of dialogue and this is tough for me to say because it not my place to say that feels authentic or not to African-American community but someone who was from Mississippi literally When I when i see and you know, and I know so many people that like have this draw.

01:00:29: But what?

01:00:30: See dialogue Some of the dialog in this movie Of course.

01:00:34: I can't speak for You Know I Can't Speak For Black Culture but Like And I wouldn't to be to be crystal clear but there's some Dialogue That You Can Tell Is Dialog written by People Who Watched Movies Over-the-top.

01:00:52: dialogue as opposed to it in my opinion like being there You know, Like for example and I'll stop with this because This is getting that picky but like if i were To do an impression of My mom.

01:01:09: And Mom?

01:01:09: This Is not In any way meant to be.

01:01:11: let's just snive and Just say mom It's just like someone That i grew up With right Someone that someone from my school or something.

01:01:17: There's a mississippi sound.

01:01:20: They're like this.

01:01:21: uh you Know Well, I'm southern.

01:01:23: so imma try and read the plot from this.

01:01:25: So it's like trying to leave their troubled lives behind.

01:01:28: twin brothers returned there Mississippi hometown start again only discover that an even greater evils waiting to welcome back You know yeah, I mumbled they're in stuff is just not trying to lead their troubled life behind.

01:01:39: There's this thing where Hollywood Californian people do a mississippi thing And they were like trying believe they are troubled lives Behind.

01:01:46: twin brothers return today of Mississippi home town to start again Only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

01:01:57: And I'm like, That's not how Blanche sounds in Golden Girls!

01:02:02: Like what are we doing?

01:02:04: Why isn't there no accent?

01:02:05: that's like Alright y'all, well Ding!

01:02:08: Trying to lay bare trouble lives behind.

01:02:09: twin brothers turn their Mississippi hometown and start again.

01:02:13: Oh brother where art thou had incredible accents.

01:02:19: Just the first Southern Movie that came to mind.

01:02:22: There's a lot.

01:02:26: Shit, they're so many good ones.

01:02:28: yeah anyway whatever there's A lot of really great movies That take place in the south but actually just get it.

01:02:33: The help has great southern accents But this is Just like whale.

01:02:39: We're in the delta and we better watch out for them.

01:02:42: They have vampires.

01:02:43: And I'm like, what are you doing?

01:02:47: It's not needed more than Lord of The Rings.

01:02:50: it's nominated more then.

01:02:52: uh Like training day or titanic Or i don't know.

01:02:57: So many great movies but anyway That's my piece on that.

01:03:00: Um...I think one little note I had at the beginning is Well, you know what I've talked enough about movies.
